We have served curry and coffee in Ginza since 1946. Our menu focuses on these two things.
Our curry is called Karai Rice. We serve it on a white oval plate with our name on the rim. Our signature is Karai Rice topped with a fried egg.
Kenichi, our third-generation owner, runs the shop today. We describe ourselves as a curry shop that surprises you — and one without a queue.
We are on the basement floor of Ginza Land Building, one minute on foot from Ginza-itchome Station. Look for the red sign on the corner.
The Story of New Castle
The doors closed after 66 years.A letter opened them again.
In 2012, New Castle closed its doors. The next part of its story began with a regular who had visited every week.

1946
Eight friends. A coffee shop.
In 1946, the year after the war ended, eight friends returning from the continent pooled their resettlement allowances to open a coffee shop in Ginza. They named it New Castle.
A year or two later, taxes became due. The friends wanted to avoid paying them, so Kahei Yanagida bought the shop from them on his own and became its first owner.
Four or five years after opening
Curry joins the coffee.
Looking for a meal to go with coffee, the shop began serving curry. The shop calls it Karai Rice.
The sign reads “Coffee and Karai Rice.” When the first owner passed away in 2003, Hiroji Miyata, who had left his office job to help at the shop, became the second owner and kept its taste alive.
July 31, 2012
After 66 years, the doors close.
After the Great East Japan Earthquake, ground distortion and the building’s deterioration led to a decision to demolish it. On July 31, 2012, the shop closed, much to the regret of its many fans.
A letter from a regular
“Please let me take over.”
The young man who wrote to the second owner had visited every week for more than seven years. He was Kenichi Iizuka, now the shop’s third owner.
He learned the recipe from the second owner. After about a year of preparation, New Castle reopened on June 15, 2013, in the basement of Ginza Land Building.
Passing on the recipe was only the beginning. The second owner worked alongside him for three full years after the reopening.

2026
80 years. Still cooking here.
In 2026, New Castle celebrates its 80th anniversary. To mark the occasion, we introduced a natto topping.
We still make the curry in our own pots. A shop serving just coffee and curry carries on, one floor below the streets of Ginza.

Our approach
We blend sautéed onions into our curry to bring out their sweetness. If you prefer less heat, we can add honey to make it milder.
We brew specialty coffee by hand using the pour-over method.
